Haneda Airport Tax Refund with Visit Japan Web, Tested: Save the Customs Wi-Fi First, Then 4 Steps to Customs Confirmation
Under the new tax refund system that starts on 1 November 2026, consumption tax is only refunded after customs confirms your purchases when you leave Japan. Based on a reporter's field test of Visit Japan Web at Haneda Airport (ETtoday, November 2026) and Japan Customs' official information, this guide covers the dedicated tax refund Wi-Fi, what to set up before you leave, the steps at the airport and where the kiosks are.

Key points
- At Haneda Airport you can skip the queue at the tax-free procedure kiosks and do the customs confirmation (export confirmation) of your tax-free goods on your phone with Visit Japan Web (VJW).
- You need to connect to Japan Customs' dedicated tax refund Wi-Fi, "
Customs_WiFi_For_TaxRefund" (passwordjcustoms). It only works in designated areas of the international departures lobby, so you cannot do this from your hotel or anywhere else outside the airport. - Before you leave, register your passport photo page and landing permission sticker in VJW.
- 4 steps at the airport: connect to the Wi-Fi → refresh the page → check your purchase records and tap Confirm → see whether you get green or red. Do all of this before you check in bags or go through security.
- VJW tax refund confirmation is one account per person; family members cannot share an account.
- In Haneda Terminal 3, the tax-free procedure kiosks (near counter F) and the customs inspection area (opposite counter A) are in two separate spots a long way apart, so allow extra time.
Tax refund Wi-Fi (network name and password)
To do the customs confirmation online in VJW, you connect to a dedicated Wi-Fi network that Japan Customs provides inside the airport. The network name and password are published on the Japan Customs website.

Screenshot this page now so you can connect from it at the airport.
The dedicated Wi-Fi is only available at 7 airports: Narita, Haneda, Kansai, Chubu (Centrair), Fukuoka, New Chitose and Naha. Even there, it only connects in designated areas of the international departures lobby (before security), so you cannot get it done at your hotel in advance.
Before you go: register your passport in Visit Japan Web
To use online confirmation at the airport, you first need to register your passport details under the tax-free purchase and refund menu in Visit Japan Web. It is best to do this soon after you arrive in Japan rather than leaving it until you are at the airport.
Scan your passport photo page
Follow the on-screen instructions to photograph and register your passport's photo page.
Scan your landing permission sticker
Scan the landing permission sticker that was put in your passport when you entered Japan.
Check both show as registered
Only once both are registered can you show your tax-free QR code in shops and do the online customs confirmation at the airport.
4 steps at the airport (before you check in bags)
Bring your tax-free goods and complete these steps before you drop bags at the check-in counter and before security.
Connect to the tax refund Wi-Fi
In a designated area of the departures lobby, connect to "Customs_WiFi_For_TaxRefund" (password jcustoms).
Refresh the page
Open the tax refund procedure page in VJW and refresh it once you are on the Wi-Fi.
Check your purchase records, then tap "Confirm"
Make sure your passport details and purchase records (shop name, purchase date) are correct before you tap it.
Check the result colour
Green means you are done and can go straight to bag drop. Red means you need to take your tax-free goods to the customs inspection area to be checked.
What if the page says "Disabled: No purchase record found"?
It means no purchase record could be found, so the "Confirm" button cannot be tapped. First contact the shop where you bought the goods and check whether the tax-free sales record has been uploaded. If VJW still does not work, use the tax-free procedure kiosks (self-service machines) at the airport instead.
VJW tax refund confirmation: one account per person
For arrival procedures, one account can generate entry QR codes for the whole family, but tax-free customs confirmation does not work that way: everyone who bought tax-free goods has to use their own account.
| Arrival procedures | Tax-free / refund confirmation | |
|---|---|---|
| Sharing an account with family | Yes (one account can generate entry QR codes for the whole family) | No (one account per person) |
| When the whole family needs confirmation | — | Use the physical kiosks and scan each person's passport separately (advice from airport staff) |
- What you do online in VJW is the customs confirmation; you do not receive the money online. The refund is still handled by the shop or the refund company the shop works with.
- Before you leave, everyone claiming a refund must register their own passport photo page and landing permission sticker.
Where are the tax-free procedure kiosks at Haneda? (Terminal 2 and Terminal 3)
According to the reporter's field test, the kiosks were hard to find on the ground and the signs were not obvious. These are the locations confirmed in the test:
| Terminal | Tax-free procedure kiosks | Customs inspection area |
|---|---|---|
| Terminal 2, 3F international departures lobby | To the right of the "団体 X (Group X)" sign on the wall, at the end of the corridor | Near the kiosks |
| Terminal 3, 3F international departures lobby | Near check-in counter F (towards the Keikyu Line platforms) | Opposite check-in counter A |
Terminal 3: kiosks and inspection area are in different places
- ACustoms inspection area
- B
- C
- D
- E
- FTax-free kiosks
- …

If you get a red result in Terminal 3, you will have to walk from near counter F to opposite counter A, so leave extra time for check-in. Detailed maps of each terminal are also in our Haneda Airport (HND) tax refund guide.
