Taxes and fees around a visit
Ticket prices include consumption tax, and there is no separate visitor tax for the Expo. Paper tickets cost ¥100 more. The venue is cashless: shops and restaurants do not take cash.
Yokohama has no accommodation tax as of 22 October 2026. If you stay in Tokyo, nights from 1 April 2027 pay 3% of the room price when it is ¥13,000 or more per person. Hot spring hotels, for example in Hakone, add a bathing tax, usually ¥150 per person per day.
From 1 November 2026, tax-free shopping in Japan works by refund: you pay the consumption tax in the shop and get it back after the customs check when you leave Japan. Food and drinks you have at the venue are not tax-free.
