Tax-free shopping in Yokohama for Expo visitors

Visitors to GREEN×EXPO 2027 shop under Japan’s new tax-free rules. From 1 November 2026 you pay the full price, including consumption tax, and get the tax back after the customs check when you leave Japan. Checked on 22 October 2026.

How it works

  1. Shop with your passport

Spend at least ¥5,000 before tax in one store on one day and say you want tax-free before you pay.

  2. Register your refund

Register how you want the money back, for example to a credit card, in the way the store explains. Keep the receipt.

  3. Keep the goods unused

Do not open and use what you bought tax-free before you leave Japan.

  4. Customs kiosk before check-in

Within 90 days, scan your passport at the airport kiosk with the goods before you check in any bag. The tax is refunded after a green result.

At the Expo

The venue is cashless. Whether shops at the Expo will sell tax-free had not been announced by 22 October 2026. Food and drinks you have at the venue, Expo tickets and other services are never tax-free.

Tips

  • Buy in one store on one day to reach ¥5,000 before tax. Receipts from two stores do not add up.
  • In department stores, go to the tax-free counter on the day you buy.
  • Visitor coupons can give an extra 5% or more on top of the tax refund.
  • Do the kiosk check before you check in your bags. Once you pass immigration you cannot go back.

Questions

Can I get the tax back on Expo tickets?
