MUJI’s pages still show the old rules

As of 28 October 2026, MUJI’s Tax-free Services page and FAQ still describe the rules in force until 31 October 2026, such as sealed packaging and an upper limit for consumables. From 1 November 2026 you pay the full price, the minimum is ¥5,000 before tax at the same store on the same day, and sealed bags and the consumables limit no longer apply.

Entry stamp and Visit Japan Web

MUJI checks your entry date from the stamp in your passport. Its FAQ notes that travellers who use an automated gate on arrival get no entry stamp, and that MUJI cannot process a tax-free sale if it cannot confirm the entry date. The FAQ also says MUJI does not use the Visit Japan Web QR code for passport details, so bring the passport itself.

Japanese nationals living abroad must show the original of a certificate of residence or a family register annex, and MUJI does not accept other documents such as a green card or an overseas driving licence. The national rules from 1 November also accept a My Number card, but MUJI’s FAQ does not mention it.

What MUJI Ginza sells

  • Women’s, men’s and children’s clothing
  • Skincare, cosmetics and travel goods
  • Household goods, storage, bedding and furniture
  • Food, including frozen food
  • Found MUJI, MUJI BOOKS and regional products

Not possible with a tax-free purchase

  • Buying for business use or resale
  • Tax-free handling on a day after the purchase

Appliances and food

MUJI says its electrical appliances are made for Japan and their warranty is valid only in Japan. It also asks you to check best-before dates on food. Food eaten or skincare used in Japan loses the refund.

Before you leave the store and at the airport

  • Keep the receipt and register your refund method as the staff explain.
  • Customs checks each receipt as a whole. If one item on a receipt is missing at the kiosk, nothing on that receipt is refunded.
  • Leave Japan and complete the customs check within 90 days of purchase.
  • At the airport, do the kiosk check before you check in any bag.

Common questions

Does MUJI have a tourist coupon?
MUJI has not published a visitor coupon on its website as of 28 October 2026, and member offers cannot be used with tax-free purchases.
How will MUJI pay the refund?
As of 28 October 2026, MUJI has not announced its refund timing, any refund fee or a refund company. The Japan Tourism Agency says refunds are paid by the shop or a refund company working for it, so ask at the register.
Can I add up purchases from two MUJI stores?
No. The ¥5,000 minimum before tax counts only purchases at the same store on the same day.
